Have a damp area in the yard, or would you like to put some shrubs around the pond? You'll love the Clethra alnifolia, a decidous native shrub also known as summersweet or sweet pepperbush. In the wild, it grows in wet forests, bogs, wetlands, and along streams.

The fragrant, showy flower spikes bloom in the summer's heat, when most flowering shrubs have stopped blooming. The foliage turns pale yellow to golden brown in fall, and those flower spikes become spikes of dark brown seed capsules, which persist into winter.

Clethra alnifolia grows best in average, damp to wet, acidic soil. It prefers full sun to part shade conditions. However, it is hardy and will adapt to a wide range of soil and moisture conditions.

Pot Luck--Using Pottery for Garden Art

Most homeowners look at pottery as just a container to hold a plant on the patio or inside the home. But with so many unique shapes and sizes available today, more homeowners are using pots as decoration to add a piece of interest to the home or garden.

Sometimes a pot can be the perfect solution to turning a space that is missing something into a dazzling focal point. Just like a water fountain or a piece of statuary, a well-placed piece of pottery can turn a boring area into a visual treat for the eyes.

Consider glazed containers in unique vase or urn shapes. Tall and slender pottery can be especially stunning when placed in the right location. Instead of just putting out a sea of plants, consider how you can lead the eye to points of interest throughout your landscape or home by using a well-placed piece of pottery.

We have a great selection of pottery. Come in for a visit and our staff of nursery experts will help you find the right container to transform your empty space into a visual delight. In the right setting, the perfect pot will look like a work of art. They make great gifts, too!

How often should I add mulch to my garden and how much should I use?

Answer:
Most types of mulch take a few years to break down and decompose. How much you use--and how often--depends on why you are using it.

  • If you are just looking for aesthetics, maintain at least a 1" layer of mulch over your native soil.
  • If you are also trying to suppress weed growth and want your soil to retain more moisture, we recommend maintaining a 2-3" layer of mulch around your plants.
  • Always make sure to leave a little space around the stem base of bushes or tree trunks. This prevents rotting and allows your plants to get more oxygen.
